more than …… は「…以上」か？

２つのものを比較するときに、　more ～ than ・・・・　の形が使われることは、自明です。
ところが、～部分がなく、　more than・・・・　 という形で、・・・・の部分に形容詞や副詞がくることがあります。
たとえば、

We are more than satisfied with the result of the interview with the candidates.

形容詞がくると、「プラスの方向にもっとさらに」という意味になります。ですからこの文の意味は、

候補者面接の結果に十二分に、私達は満足している

もう一つ別な例をあげると、

Two million yen is more than enough to buy a used car.
200万円は中古車を買うには十分すぎるくらいだ。

ただし more than a little 形容詞 となると、「少し」の方向が逆転して、「大いに……」となります。「ほんの少しではなく、ほんの少しよりはちょっと多く」という意味ではありません。

His girlfriend was more than a little drunk.
彼のガールフレンドは随分と酔っていた。

He was more than a little upset about her behavior at the restaurant.
レストランでの彼女の振る舞いに彼はびっくりするどころではなかった（＝度肝を抜かれた）。

more than a little 名詞　という形もあります。

I am getting by with more than a little help from my friends.
友達から大いに助けられてどうにか暮らしている。
