1960年代に、アマチュア歴史家のフィリップ・アリエスは、これまでの歴史では子供の死亡率が高かったので、親は子にたいする思いや資力を多く割けず、子供は小さな大人として扱われたという理論を広めた。

■ここに注目■
【1】 《語法：動詞》 理論を広めたの動詞 promulgate は法律を公布するという意味が英和辞典には第一義ででているが、例文のように、自分で考え出した理論を世間に知らしめ流布させるという意味が英英辞典では第一義。
【2】 《語法：前置詞》 ～という観点からは in the way of. 日本人は from the standpoint of を頻繁に使うが、これは立場・視点をいうときに使う。例文のように、ある特定の領域をさすときにはin the way of.
【3】 《語法：前置詞》　「～にたいする・・・を割く」の前置詞は、invest ・・・ in ～.
【4】 《二元対立：旧情報⇒新情報》　下線部分が新情報。旧情報は、読者によって納得のいくような順になって登場している。(1) for most of history, (2) with child mortality too high, (3) for parents to invest much, (4) in the way of sentiment or resources, (5) in their offspring. 最後に(5)をおくことで、新情報の childrenへの移行がスムーズに進んでいる。　なおoffspringとchildrenは、英語は繰り返しを避けるために単語が変えてあるが、さしている内容は同じ。
